MUSIC CLASSES for the MASSES
TRANSFORMING the way students perceive themselves and what they can accomplish.
“Everyone can play music. Everyone deserves the opportunity to play music.” (even if they can’t afford an instrument or lessons)
“I discovered a whole population of kids who love music, but were not choosing music in school”.
That is what inspired me to create a completely different approach to music in school.
For over 25 years, Robb Janov has utilized his Masters Degree in Education and background in child development/at-risk youth to provide innovative music classes to underserved populations in Albuquerque Public Schools.
His national award-winning mid-school Rock and Rhythm program was featured on the PBS Newshour, public television and radio, the Albuquerque Journal and multiple local newscasts.
It has served as a model for other music programs throughout the country. The continued success of the program prompted Albuquerque Public Schools to build a 2700 square-foot rehearsal and performance facility uniquely designed for the Rock and Rhythm program.
In addition to being named a PBS American Graduate Champion and an ING/Voya Unsung Hero, Janov has presented TEDx Talks (TEDxABQ and TEDxABQ Women), received a Creative Bravos Award and has acquired numerous local and national grants from the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, the Mockingbird Foundation, Muzak ‘Heart and Soul’ Foundation and others.
He has presented at international music conferences (Adelaide, SA - Virtual Music Education, Bayreuth Young Artists Festival) and the American String Teachers Association (collaborating with innovative educators including Julie Lyonn Lieberman, Martha Mooke, Joe Deninzon, Tracy Silverman, Matt Bell and Cory Zilisch). Robb provides clinics, performances and consulting for schools and school districts.
In 2013, Robb launched the Rock and Rhythm Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to provide instruments and inspirational music opportunities to a wider population of youth and communities.
RRF has received grants from the Urban Enhancement Trust Fund, the Hancock Family Foundation, the Music Guild of New Mexico as well as support from Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn, Albuquerque Youth Symphony, Seman Violins and numerous local businesses.
